ASIMO (アシモ) is a humanoid robot created in 2000 by Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha. ASIMO counted as the first humanoid robot that can walk on two legs in a manner similar to human once. The robot weighs 43 kilograms and is similar in appearance an astronaut.
Three prototypes preceded the current ASIMO in 2000-model: Prototype P1 in 1993, P2 in 1996 and P3 in 1997.
Robot's name is a backronym to pay tribute to science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, among other things, created the three laws of Robotics. Officially the name stands for "Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility" (sv. Advanced (forward) step in innovative mobility). On the Japanese name is pronounced ashimo, which, not entirely random means "with bones".
